Wrong-way accidents can happen very quickly. You may only have a split second to notice the vehicle and take action to avoid the crash.
The problem is the combined speed of the cars. Say that both vehicles are traveling on the interstate, driving at 70 miles an hour. This means that they are closing the distance between them at 140 MPH, so the crash feels almost instant.
Stay in the right lane
One thing you can do to avoid this type of accident is to drive in the right lane most of the time. If the other driver is also doing so, they will pass by in your left lane without causing a collision.
Focus on the horizon
While driving, it’s also important to look at the horizon and keep an eye on traffic well ahead of you. This is especially true at night. You may see the headlights of the car approaching while you still have plenty of time to react.
Try to get the driver’s attention
If you do see a wrong-way driver, try to get their attention by honking your horn or flashing your lights. There’s a chance that the driver doesn’t even realize they’re heading in the wrong direction. If you alert them, you could get them to stop before they cause an accident.
But remember that most wrong-way drivers are under the influence of alcohol. They may be too intoxicated to realize that they’ve made a mistake. Once the vehicle goes by, you should call 911 and report the driver to the local authorities.
Of course, you may not be able to avoid the accident and you could be injured due to the other driver’s negligent mistake. If so, be sure you know how to seek financial compensation.
