How to spot drunk drivers and avoid them on the road

Drunk driving accidents remain one of the most dangerous and prevalent issues on the road today. For sober drivers, identifying and avoiding intoxicated drivers is a crucial skill that can reduce the risk of accidents.

Knowing the signs of impaired driving and how to respond safely can help sober drivers navigate the roads with greater awareness and caution.

Erratic speeding and braking

Drunk drivers often have difficulty maintaining a consistent speed, resulting in abrupt accelerations or decelerations. Sober drivers might notice a driver speeding up for no apparent reason and then suddenly slowing down. In some cases, they may drive far below the speed limit, which can also be a sign of impaired driving.

Swerving or weaving

One of the most common signs of an impaired driver is difficulty staying within their lane. Drunk drivers may swerve from side to side or drift over lane markers. They may even drive on the shoulder of the road or veer into oncoming lanes without seeming to notice or care.

Delayed reactions and erratic turns

Alcohol impairs reaction time, which can lead to delayed responses to:

  • Traffic signals
  • Stop signs
  • Other vehicles

Drunk drivers may wait too long at green lights or make turns abruptly, often without signaling. Their inability to anticipate and execute turns smoothly is a significant red flag.

Tailgating or excessive following distance

Impaired drivers may either follow other vehicles too closely or leave an unusually large gap between their car and the one in front. Both behaviors stem from the impaired driver’s inability to judge distances accurately, which is a common effect of intoxication.

Staying alert for signs of drunk driving is a key part of defensive driving and personal safety on the road. However, such efforts do not guarantee that diligent drivers will completely avoid encountering drunk drivers. In the event of a drunk driving accident, sober drivers should not hesitate to seek legal support and hold the reckless driver accountable for their actions.
